I had so much fun pairing these books together--it really is fun to read a retelling immediately after reading the source material. Thank you to @BooksandLala for inspiring this idea!

Books I Mentioned:
Antony and Cleopatra by William Shakespeare
Immortal Longings by Chloe Gong

I was so happy by Jennifer's comment. I get really annoyed by people who say Shakespeare didn't write the plays and poems. Most of this is down to pure snobbery. He was a lower miuddle class lad from the Midlands who was also a genius, but these people don't believe this possible and say they must have been written by some noble or other. Thank you. Roddy McDowell was brilliant as Octavian in the Elizabeth Taylor film.

I've been watching the TV series Rome and enjoying it. Now I definitely will read Anthony and Cleopatra! Thanks for another great video.

Looking forward to reading Antony and Cleopatra for Shaketember! I was thinking of skipping this one, because I had some other plans, but you just made me want to read it. Thanks! 😊

It is a good idea to combine classic and modern fantasy

I love 'Antony and Cleopatra' she's my favourite female character from the tragedies. It's got great a description lifted from Plutarch and a lovely meta reference about being played in the future by some squeaking boy. Film wise Janet Suzman is great as Cleopatra 1974, audio wise Branagh's Antony to Alex Kingston's Cleopatra is great. I'd love to see it live, I never have.

Maybe after Winter's Tale I'll check out Anthony and Cleopatra. Immortal Longings sounds like a good one.

It seems as though the Oxford editions are the only ones where Antony is spelt as Anthony

"Love malady" (mal d'amore) was definitely not courtly love!🤭Have you read Karen Essex's retelling "Pharaoh"?🧡

Would you say that Antony and Cleopatra is a good starting point for Shakespeare or is there an obvious other place to start? He's a huge blind spot for me as I've only seen the 1996's adaptation "Romeo + Juliet".
Also, I just discovered your channel and I love it!
