The New Tudor Black Bay Ceramic vs. The Black Bay Dark. (2021)

Tudor just released another brand new watch in 2021...no it's not made of sterling silver...not 18k gold either...BUT it is made out of ceramic! However, 5 years ago Tudor released this...the Black Bay Dark. Possibly the catalyst to the new ceramic. So! Is the new watch worth picking up? What is a METAS certification anyways? Is it better than being a chronometer? What if you have a 14,999 gauss magnet near you at all times?

Thank you, London Jewelers, for sponsoring this video!

Today, we dive into the new Tudor Black Bay Ceramic, and see how it compares to the Black Bay Dark that preceded it by 5 years.

In 2016, Tudor launched the Black Bay Dark, an all blacked out PVD coated version of their classic Black Bay that marked a ton of firsts for the brand. While not the first Black Bay to be offered in some kind of alternative material or finish (that would be the Black Bay Bronze about a year earlier), it was the first to feature the brand's then-new in-house movement. It was also the first watch from any of the major Swiss houses to really embrace in a mainstream way the idea of that kind of murdered out aesthetic. It was popular, if not slightly divisive, at the time, and has only grown more so since then.

Fast forward to 2021, and we have Tudor's newest release, a watch that, interestingly, was launched after the brand's 2021 novelties had already been announced. But this is the year of Tudor playing with materials, so it only makes sense they would roll out the Black Bay Ceramic. First, let's talk about the movement. Tudor has chosen to step up their game here by introducing a new caliber that has been METAS certified as a Master Chronometer, meaning it must be even more accurate than a traditional Chronometer. They've also ensured the movement is resistant to magnetic fields up to 15'000 gauss. And of course, we have the black ceramic case and bezel (has Tudor done a ceramic bezel before? I don't think so). All in all, for just under $5k, you'd be hard pressed to find a much more technically impressive watch for the money, and it really goes to show Tudor's commitment to value.

The Omega Aqua Terra has the same METAS certification with a more wearable and versatile size/shape and it sells in the low fours with a discount. Best “daily” out there IMO

Tudor really need to sort that spring bar spacing out. Fitted straps aren't difficult to produce and would certainly be in line with the price.

The only reason Tudor just launches this one later in the year, is because they would have been criticized for not providing the same movement in the way more expensive gold variant.

Sounds like to me Tudor is going directly at Omega. The new omega lines are METAS certified. Now if only these two brands can race to thin out their watches.

The Dark is a much better looking piece than the Ceramic IMO. It has the red accent on the dial, and bezel markings that you can actually read.

looks like they want to compete directly with Omega for clients that look for modern design and technical details. hence they will increase prices in 12 months. The yellow gold watch is just indicative of that to prepare clients mentally that Tudor can cost 10k+

id rather have the steel one on bracelet than a ceramic case which will crack easily if dropped...

The better technical "deal" is the Omega SMP 300 Diver (which also includes a micro adjustable bracelet), better movement (co-axial escapement), more history/heritage, more prestige, and even a better watch box. So, it still is the standard in this category (and generally is compared to the Rolex Sub). However, Tudor is making great progress.

I got the BB Dark and even managed to get it at a discount at an AD! I do like the new ceramic. I might to trade my BB Dark in.

Well said Tudor is making big moves. Should Omega be worried? No, their fans are more die hard than most other brands and they have some amazing movements. Tudor wants to gobble up any potential customer that is tired of waiting for Rolex or wants a more affordable non swatch option with METAS. IMO if that’s my budget I’m going Tudor over other divers.

Interesting comments and you really like the BB Dark. The new ceramic is an interesting package. The new COSC and METAS certified movement is impressive and finally makes good use of the new display back. Ceramic is a good material for the case because it is light and scratch proof. I like the mirror polished bevel on the case lugs - it really pops and ties to the rest of the BB line. The bits of red on the Dark is nice and the grey text on the ceramic is very understated. The ceramic bezel insert is a step up from the aluminum insert on other BBs and I wish it was more legible. While the dark bezel insert limits the use as a dive watch, this is a weekend warrior.
