I put a picture of Dwayne Johnson and filled a slide with it for my presentation at school. My classmates loved it but I lost half the grade

As great as it is, the surprise element can only work in a semi-formal event, but not in working situation especially if we're giving ideas. I mostly just used image>text principle, 3 color palette design, and add simple animation that'll make the presentation flows easier. It's still fun to watch your animation tho, would love to have that in a class session back then :)

after seeing like 5 "surprise" powerpoint shorts in the last week, I realize how quickly this would become such a drag if people start doing it regularly

That's what I did. I was doing a presentation during a business meeting. My boss's boss's boss (you get the point) were all there. I personally left photos of each of them cheating with their affair partner in the slides at certain points in the presentation. It was a quick click to the next slide and the horror of their faces was priceless. Why did I do it? Their wives paid me to do it.

This is so great but since I'm not very talkative, i always made sure to stick to the point. I know it's boring, but I would love to see more people do these kind of creative slides! At least, someone will brighten the class with some good sense of humour!
