I think the goal kick positioning has changed dramatically now you can play it short in the box. This is because even lower step teams do not line up in a bunch much nowadays. They okay it short to draw in attackers and create gaps in midfield to play into. Also, I thought the flag switched hands depending on which way you're running. Watch the epl assistants. As they move towards half way it's in the right hand and vice versa. I'm not sure that is the same as keeping it in sight of the referee.

Some basic tips for very new referees. Better diagrams and video clips would be helpful. The locations indicated only work for specific instances, as well as some of the bullet points. E.g. you should always keep your flag in the hand closest to the referee at all times. If you're recovering (running back from a goal kick or defensive clear) you'll have the flag in your right hand.

Thanks for the tips. Are you sure about the corner positioning though? I would consider always standing on the opposite side. This way, you are always in contact with the assistent. I also saw some professional referees choose that position.
