The modern piano was invented in Italy by Bartolomeo Cristofori in the early 18th century. Cristofori was a skilled craftsman and instrument maker who worked for the Medici family in Florence. He developed the first piano, which he called the "gravicembalo col piano e forte" (harpsichord with soft and loud), around 1700. The piano was designed to be a dynamic instrument that could produce both soft and loud notes, unlike the harpsichord, which could only produce one volume level. The piano quickly became popular and went on to become one of the most important and widely used instruments in Western music.
