Tour of The Making of Midnight Oil Exhibition with Rob Hirst

In June 2014, the Manly Art Gallery and Museum launched The Making of Midnight Oil Exhibition curated by Ross Heathcote and Rob Hirst. Before the exhibition moved to the next location, Rob took director Ray Argall for a tour around the gallery.

Devastated to hear of your diagnosis today Rob (12/04/25). Ive been revisiting all these clips on You-Tube to remind me of what a fantastic Guy you are and how you were Australia's greatest ever Rock Drummer. All I ever wanted to be as a kid in the 80's was you. Stay strong old mate.

Despite having lived overseas for decades, the Oils were my band growing up. Saw them numerous times at pubs around the place. Also remember seeing their bills up in certain locations in Sydney. This video was particularly poignant for me in that mention was made to the ANU bar down in Canberra, which back in the day was the city’s best live venue. Saw both the Oils there (forgotten with who), and also the Johnnys. Had a great atmosphere as we undergrads used to really blow off steam. Also remember me and my mates giving Peter Garrett some stick because he had attended a different residential college on campus. We even got a smile out of him.

Yep, saw this - 10yrs ago, man it was awesome they way it was brought together and installed for the public, plus it was free....
In a great location for the pub lunch afterwards.

I arrived in Oz Nov. '79 for one year working holiday. Best time of my life, helped by my introduction to the Oils who I saw 3 times.
Memories never to be forgotten.

I was 1 day off getting Rob hirsts autograph at the Melbourne exhibition. I was devastated. Loved the exhibition though.

'Gave Rob my old band's demo CD back in 2004 after watching him at the Basement with the Sliders. Never did get the call to support the Oils on tour... lol
