Just to clear a common misconception, a cathedral is no longer required or sufficient for a town to become a city; that connection has been abolished in 1889 due to the industrial revolution! City status is now granted by the monarch and competitions are held during special occasions (last three were 2000 New Millenium, 2002 Golden Jubilee and 2012 Diamond Jubilee) where towns send in applications to become cities and the Queen selects the lucky winners, which is entirely her choice! Many of the major cities like Manchester and Liverpool were granted city status before they gained cathedrals and there are many cities that still haven't got cathedrals like Leeds and Southampton. Likewise, there are many cathedral towns that don't have city status, like Brecon, Blackburn and Guildford; some of which have lost their city status like Rochester when it became merged with Chatham and Gillingham to form Medway. However, city status doesn't really grant any special powers, it's just a prestige that officially gives towns the right to call themselves cities and even then, it's not illegal for towns to unofficially call themselves cities, whether they have city in their name (i.e. Letchworth Garden City and Welwyn Garden City) or their signs read "city centre" instead of "town centre", which I've seen with my own eyes in Dunfermline, Fife. Reading and Milton Keynes both formerly put "city centre" on their buses and signs, the latter to avoid confusion with the many old town centres nearby and the former cos it's salty about its failed attempts to gain city status and even losing to village-sized towns like St Asaph, but that caused some controversy since it disrespects the Queen (apparently) so now they use "Central Reading" and "Central MK" instead.

@Buzzfeed it's actually 70 cities, you forgot Guildford, which just recently got city status. So I guess no one won :)

*London* isn't a city, no matter what *BuzzFeed UK* say.

*Greater London* is a county and region, and *London* doesn't have a definition.

*Greater London* contains 2 cities which are:
1 - *City of London*
2 - *City of Westminster*

The *City of London* is also a county, and as it's only *1 mile square, * is the *3rd smallest city in the UK.*

Also *Hove* is technically a city, again contrary to what *BuzzFeed UK* says, as *Brighton and Hove* is the name of the city. *Brighton* and *Hove* were both towns, which joined together in 2000 to become a city.
