You should put some kind of friction where it’s spinning so it doesn’t get birdsnested, that’s what we use for wire welders

This is the first time I’ve seen a fishing backlash on a 3d printer spool 😂

Hot tip with these. These need to be rolled twice.

The large diameter to small diameter makes the line snap on the roll if you leave it. Recommended rolling it out to the first roll and re rolling it out to another roll. This will allow the diameters to match

Use lenz’s law with some magnets and aluminum to slow the spool just like in a bait casting fishing reel.

I had nothing but problems with this winder. The pastamatic works 10, 000 times better and has friction plates on the feeder spool so that bird nest doesn’t happen.

You should be able to easily add a simple magnetic braking setup on that spool. It needs some friction added to prevent any backlashes.

Rewinding it like this will crack and sometimes explode the filament. They are originally wound while still heated, so they'll want to keep their shape. Going from large diameter to small diameter puts the filament under a lot of stress. You're best off getting those two-part filament holders you can just snap through the filament without winding it

On elegoo rolls you can rip off one side at a time and the bambu spool snaps firmly inside. It's a perfect fit. I'll definitely check it out for my polymaker spools though!

A hammer tensioner using a rubber head might really help the stopping looping in the spool. (I have spooled a lot of fishing barrels and tension helps so much)

Thank you for the printables number! So many videos from people showing off their prints but don't put any info on where to find it! 🖖

You can rip the sides of the cardboard spool off and slip it into the bambu spool. The bambulabs spool comes apart for refills...

Might get in on this, buying bulk 3kg spools and respooling to 1kg for the ams would be nice, might even add a scale feature to register exactly what weight is on the loading spool.

I’m a total beginner and bought some extra spools but realized I didn’t even know this was possible or what to search to make it happen. So glad I came across this video!

Make sure to soap/lube up any moving parts to reduce heat and or cracking due to friction

Add toothbrush tips to both edges of the spools. It will absorb the momentum.

Nice wall organizer! And of course - cool device!

I used to work for an industrial 3d printer company making filaments. Respoolers were fun little things to dial in perfectly with tension/offset/speed

Some sort of resistance on the main spool will not only keep it from spinning out but it'll tighten the filament on the new one

Dang this really takes me back to the old days when I worked as a projectionist at the theater of taking the film off the 5-7 reels onto the large makeup platters.

@FTBT3D, I don't know if that happened to you, but I changed the spool in a PLA filament and after some time the filament was all broken and I had to throw it away. I don't know if the factory spools the filament warm because the filament has a "memory" of where it was in the spool. So, the inside, near the center, has a smaller diameter than the outside and after changing spool, it broke at every 10 feet or so.
