Henry David Thoreau's Walden is one of the most well-known non-fiction works by an American author. It was published in 1854 and chronicles Thoreau's existence on the shores of Walden Pond for two years, two months, and two days. Walden is a sociological criticism of the Western World, with each chapter highlighting some characteristic of mankind that needs to be discarded or admired. Thoreau tackles additional concerns plaguing man in society, ranging from economy and reading to isolation and higher laws, in addition to his critique of the civilized world. He also takes time to reflect on his time at Walden Pond, commenting on the animals and how others viewed him as a result of his being there, and using those experiences to illustrate his philosophical ideas. This lengthy discussion of nature has been seen as a powerful protest against the natural religion preached by transcendentalists like Thoreau and Emerson.
