Modern phones come equipped with location-aware functionality, which combines cellular triangulation and Wi-Fi with hardware from the global positioning system (GPS) to provide an accurate location estimate.
Spoofing your smartphone's GPS location is not the same as using a VPN. While a VPN doesn't alter the location of your phone, it functions at the network level to hide your true IP address and allow you to connect to a server in another nation.
Since most online services occasionally want to activate your GPS to validate the position, this works much better with them.
