The cold weather today has caused a surge in demand for electricity.
In fact, at 94-and-a-half gigawatts, demand was the highest ever recorded.
It appears to have exceeded this winter's expected peak and almost a month before it was forecast to.
Choi Min-jung reports.
Electricity demand in South Korea is expected to hit an all-time high on Thursday as the country grapples with a strong cold wave and heavy snowfall.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy forecasts a peak of 94-point-5 gigawatts.
This exceeds the previous record of 93 gigawatts posted in July.
The Ministry previously forecasted the demand to hit its peak in mid-January, at 94 gigawatts.
It also said the demand during the winter season has twice already hit record-highs, on Monday and then Wednesday.
The country is regarded as being under an emergency situation if backup power reserves fall to below ten gigawatts.
South Korea is extremely close to that threshold as on Wednesday there were only 10-point-6 gigawatts left.
The reserve margin also fell to 11-point-4 percent, the lowest level seen this winter.
The Ministry says the power reserve was kept at over 10 gigawatts thanks to the activation of the Shin Hanul 1 nuclear reactor.
Without it, backup power is estimated to have fallen to below three gigawatts,.. and the reserve margin would've decreased by three percentage points.
The country is also under pressure as heavy snowfall across the country has significantly lowered the amount of solar power generation.
