TRAUMATIC MYOSITIS OSSIFICANS
• Heterotopic ossification due to blunt soft tissue trauma
• Presents as an enlarging soft tissue after trauma
• Adolescents
• X-rays: peripheral ossification with distinct margin surrounding radiolucent center of immature osteoid and mesenchymal tissue; mass is separated from long shaft of the bone (no separation is seen in a neoplasm)
• Tx: conservative management — PT for motion and NSAIDs (indomethacin); surgery only if disability, prolonged rest (years), and negative bone scan; note that surgery can result in more heterotopic ossification
