Liberals should NEVER compromise with conservatives or “meet them in the middle.” Because every time this happens, conservatives always move further to the right immediately afterwards. In order to meet conservatives halfway, liberals have to move to the right, and then conservatives just move further right so that the next time liberals compromise with them, conservatives are even closer to getting what they really want. Liberals should therefore always stand their ground and strive to pull conservatives to the Left rather than shifting the Overton Window even more onto rightwing territory. In short, give conservatives an inch and they’ll take a mile. (Plus, whenever liberals compromise with conservatives, liberals just appear weak and lend undeserved credibility to conservatives’ position or agenda.) Meeting conservatives “in the middle, ” especially when it comes to human rights, is simply a horrid idea or strategy.
