Ferrari’s BEST Race Car isn't in F1

Now, we know that Ferrari’s F1 team have recently been struggling with a car that is quick over one lap, but doesn’t have great race pace. They also have never been the (sharpest) of decision-makers when it comes to race strategy.

“We are checking”

But the 499P, the new Ferrari Hypercar that was unveiled last year needed to NAIL those things. They had one goal, create a competitive Hypercar that could WIN at Le Mans - over 50 years since their last win in the top class.

So they had to create something that was reliable, kind on it’s tyres and could be fast over 24 hours.

Not gonna lie, it seems a little clickbaity to call this car dominant when the Toyota cars beat it at 6 out of the 7 races, and finished less than 90 seconds behind at Le Mans.

edit- they changed the wording of the title

As usual with Driver61 videos not about Formula 1, we once again have to make some smaller corrections.

0:20 - The Ferrari 499p does not have 1000hp. The regulations limit the maximum combined engine output to 500kw (680hp) + - 20kw depending on BoP. So despite having a 680hp combustion engine and a 270hp strong hybrid. it does not make a combined 950hp. The combustion engine gets turned down once the Hybrid kicks in at the speed regulated via BoP. This error is later corrected, but saying 1000hp hypercar is still wrong here.

1:30 - The decision for Ferrari to join the Hypercar class was not because of the financial regulations in Formula 1. While they have helped in the decision, Ferrari themselves stated that the Hypercar ruleset was attractive for them because the expected cost was significantly lower than it was during LMP1 times. FIA / FOM later clarified that sharing information from other Programs with the Formula 1 program as a way to circumvent the financial regulation is not allowed, but I'm sure there will be some wiggle room the teams use.

2:30 - Ferrari uses a Chassis built by Dallara which is very similar to the LMDh Chassis used by the Cadillac and BMW LMDh. Visual similarities of the 3 cars can be found in air intakes on the side

5:50 - Activation for LMH is not at 190kph, but defined within the Balance of performance. Peugeot for example was allowed to use it at 135kph. I will let this point slide however, since BoP always had the Activation Speed at 190kph for Ferrari over the entire season.

6:10 - LMDh has the incorrect name. the h in LMDh has no meaning. No I can not explain why, but in every official document it is called "Le Mans Daytona h". Also that ruleset was developed by both IMSA and the ACO.

6:20 - Far bigger differences between LMH and LMDh than the Hybrid powering rear wheels or front wheels. Far more interesting in my opinion is that the LMDh Hybrid only delivers 50kw instead of 200kw.

6:20 - LMDh does not have an activation speed like LMH, mostly due to the far weaker Hybrid mentioned in the previous point. The rule for LMH Hybrid activation speed exists because there are manufacturers (Glickenhaus and Vanwall) who do not have a hybrid at all

8:40 - Correct for last season, but unfortunately Peugeot has noticed that the wingless design doesn't work on certain tracks. They have already announced to race with a rear wing in 2024 (if they have enough jokers to go through with it)

9:10 - Toyota has had full seasons worth of development in their car.

9:40 - while not entirely incorrect it is presented as a like a big misunderstanding for Balance of Performance. BoP does NOT factor in previous success in the class. It only focusses on the maximum theoretical performance in the next race with that BoP. Which is something Toyota has managed to get very close to, while Ferrari messed up their strategy at Sebring, had a brake failure at Portimao and tyres that were not even remotely up to temperature after 2 racelaps at Spa costing them almost a lap in wet conditions.

10:05 - Ferrari only lead 2 of the 4 practice sessions

11:50 - Ferrari had the issue with the starter twice, but I guess that's still more reliable than the front downforce of Toyota getting destroyed by a squirrel

And finally: Le Mans was the only race Ferrari won this season. Calling it dominant is a bit ambitious. Espacially given that their small restarting issue might have cost them the lead with 20 minutes to go if Toyota hadn't messed up the brake balance into Arnage

Calling this car dominant is like calling the 2022 Ferrari dominant

What's crazy to think is that Giovinazzi is closer to winning the Triple Crown than Charles Leclerc

Edit: Well boys, it seems like Chuck has the advantage now.

It was sure a delight to Ferrari make a comeback to WEC with a competitive and "rapid" car, however, even with BoP it was beaten by... the dominant Toyota.

Toyota literally won everything bar Le Mans, mainly due to the last minute BOP changes. The Ferrari is quick, but in what world is it dominant? Jesus the clickbait these days...

Dominant? You must have been watching a different championship then us. Yes, it won le mans, but it’s absolutely not dominant

Are u kidding?! The most dominant car in WEC 2023 is Toyota. They won all of the races except Le Man. They were the fastest car in hypercar. Just stupid BOP interfered to won Le Man

Ferrari’s DOMINANT Race Car! (it won one race where Toyota got their usual LM luck and died, in the other 6 rounds of WEC, the 499P got curbstompted by the GR010)

Its great to see Ferrari back at sportscar racing. Im definitely not a Ferrari fan but its great to see them return. I always hoped in the LMP1 days that a brand like Ferrari would join. Now finally seeing a ferrari on track makes the already great competition in WEC even greater! Unfortunately they didn't want to race in the Rolex24 with the 499P. I would like seeing some WEC cars going to major IMSA races like the Rolex24. Maybe in the future?

Ferrari's performance is spectacular in WEC considering this is the FIRST season that they've run this car.

definitely not a dominating car but its victory on le mans is some sort of redemption after so much pain in F1

A lot of the details within the video are wrong. Porsche didn’t opt to buy in a chassis it was part of the LMDh regs. The 499P only won due to the BoP changes. Needs some refinement.

Thank god you guys finally fixed the thumbnail, which you had stolen from Only Endurance, and the title which was completely false and clickbait.

Come on guys, you are better than this, Ive been watching this channel for a few years now, it has always put out great content, informative, NO clickbaits, with insight from Scott.

Dont ruin this, Scott, if it was you that green lit a video like this, rethink your stuff mate, if you put it in some one elses hand, then fire them
