I remember the first visit well: we all do. It started as an average day, not too hot yet not too warm and in the valley this was most true.

There used to be a town down there, where the Grand Crater is now, with buildings staining the ground like an army of ants. It’s name has been long forgotten. I remember once looking up at the walls of the buildings as a child, thinking they were imposing - how naive.

It arrived at 8-o-clock. No one knows how or why or where it came from but my word it was a sight: a perfect blend of horrifying and beauty; the mischievous innocence of a house cat bred with the fierce might of a navy dragon. Mountains were a doormat: forests were grass; towns mere bugs.

It wandered through the valley like a child through a queue line, innocently stomping on our lands like nothing was there. I had left the town for a hike through the woods and I saw it approach, watching it from afar in awe. When I returned home, the Grand Crater took home’s place.

The fates of the people are unknown as no bodies were ever found. I still wander that valley sometimes. I stop at the top of the tallest mountain (it only reached its knees) and gaze at the Grand Crater where home once stood proud and silent.

Perhaps I’ll see it again someday too.
