The ID mask doesn’t use Genetic Recombination (what Ben uses to transform) but instead Photonic Displacement, so this means it just slightly alters your photons to just make you appear and NOT turn into something else. We see this in the Omniverse Episode “Breakpoint” where Fistrick and his gang used the ID masks to appear as Ben, but they didn’t get any of the Omnitrixes powers.

If i remmember correctly, this thing also allows the wear to become invisible to naked eyes, like when Grandpa Max used it to get close to Vilgax to shoot him in the face.

I think any form of bright light might actually do it. The lightning is probably the only example though we've seen in the show but if I had to Guess it's definitely some kind of hologram or other light based technology and when something is a lot stronger like a very powerful flash of light like lightning or even probably a flashlight it might overwhelm the light that's being projected around the user

ID masks must use light refraction technology to make the wearer look different. The DNAliens use them to appear as their original human form
