It's release week for the various flavors of Ubuntu 18.04. Today, I'm looking at possibly the most popular flavor of Ubuntu that isn't their flagship edition--Ubuntu MATE 18.04 "Bionic Beaver". Ubuntu MATE offers a variety different desktop layouts and is supported for up to three years.

Just to put it out there, I installed Ubuntu Mate 18.04 on my hardware last night and I'm not having any of the problems that cropped up in your videos. For me it was an upgrade from Debian 8 (xfce) and it has been a great improvement. It cleared up some problems I was having with my wifi card and runs much faster than before.

I'm glad to see Redshift installed by default. I couldn't live without it.

Thanks for the video!! Had issues installing to real hardware. Etcher wouldn't launch along with crashes you were experiencing. I installed lubuntu 18.04 with obmenu generator. So far it's great and I am really looking forward to your review!

Derek it would be interesting to see what effect moving from one to two CPU cores has on some of the more fully featured DEs. I can see the logic behind using a single core as it really tests the use of resources, but some DEs make a feature of desktop effects to make the whole experience come together. One core might be a bit mean :)

@DistroTube: I typically use VMWare products as my virtual machine software, and Everything you've had issues with in Virtualbox just works in VMWare. I did have 1 brisk menu crash in the live environment, but I think it was my goof, as I tried to start using things too quickly before everything was loaded. Once installed into the VM, it's been rock solid. The only one that doesn't work for me is Ubuntu Studio, there seems to be something wrong with the iso. Usually, I have no issues with that spin, but with version 18, it loads and nothing responds. Funny as all other spins work, including Xubuntu. I appreciate your videos, very well done!

I think if you were to try Ubuntu MATE as your daily driver Derrick I would suggest 17.10 for the short term to get a better feel for it. When the point release comes out, then perhaps take another look as you indicated. As I mentioned recently, I had the same issues with the Brisk menu crashing and slow boot up of the Welcome and Boutique windows. Oddly enough this was not an issue in the 18.04 beta, I am not sure what changed. I am sure they'll get it worked out.

The welcome not loading is a VirtualBox issue. Uncheck "Enable 3D Acceleration" in the VM display settings and welcome and software boutique will work.

Excellent video!, thank you. Like you mentioned, if developers kindly ask if you would like to share some non-personal information then I'm not too difficult myself about it.
But when it is not clear if information is being gathered and how information is gathered then I'm more reluctant to share anything.
My current OS is Manjaro KDE and thusfar very pleased with it.
Anyway, I find it interesting to see how and what makes other DE's or distro's tick.
Thank you very much for the video.

Hey distro-huggers,

I have discovered today that you can install multiple flatpaks in the same command, and then briefly leave the computer and comeback. However, it really did not seem to be any easier. Maybe I did not type it all right. I used "$ flatpak flathub install package1 && flatpak flathub install package2" but for some reason, flatpaks are now asking me for my user password when I install them.

I imagine there is some simple way to install 90 flatpaks and then go eat dinner and come back.

I assume someday that flatpak-friendly distros will have some flatpaks pre-installed, although that would just make the iso huge. Right ?? Most of the Gnome standard apps are flatpaks in flathub, and I have most of the flathub stuff installed, that isn't development related. For example, today I added Gnome Calculator flatpak, and that put a shortcut in my Utility Menu.

Aint it a good idea to wait a few weeks after a LTS release launches to install it?

I wouldn't be so quick at blaming Ubuntu Mate with the issues you were having.
I would probably blame vbox.
I gave up on vbox and vmware a while ago once I learned about KVM and how much faster it was.
I didn't have any of the problems you had, but I always set my vm's to 4GB of ram and 2 cpu's.

For me, the welcome greeter didn't launch at all post installation on physical hardware until after a reboot.

It's about time for the distros to stop including Brasero (or any cd burner). Who uses it today? If someone needs it it's in the repos anyway.

I was hoping that you would create a separate /home partition... I hate the default single partition option. I always ran into troubles when people asked to fix their computers and they had only one partition.

You obviously love distros more than anybody I know. I get burned out easily and have to learn things in spurts. Today, I just learned how to add a user to sudoer file in Debian. SparkyLinux added the 4.17 rc2 kernel, but the developer warns not to install it. Wendel over at L1 channel has a good video on Linux and Ryzen 2700 and X-470 motherboard. He claims he will post another.

Nothing but problems with bluetooth speaker, have to remove from device list everytime you reboot or shutdown and re-pair to get it to work. Beta version audio doesn't drop out but does in the so called stable version resulting in having to remove device and re-pair too.

Judging distros on VM's is iffy in my books seems like they would run better in a natural non virtual world.
