Mike Leigh is one of my all-time favorites. Meantime and Life is Sweet opened up a lot for me. Alan Clarke's films helped as well. I was raised in Baltimore, Maryland but somehow these films resonate with me a lot.

Tim Roth and Phil Daniels are excellent in Meantime...closely followed by Gary Oldman. What a stellar young cast in this hilarious and sad early film from Mike Leigh. Still one of my favourite viewing experiences as a young teenager.

The fact that Jarvis responds visually and not verbally speaks miles to his interviewing ability

Thank god for Mike Leigh, Alan Clarke and Ken Loach. The films they made for tv couldn't be surpassed.

You can tell Jarvis is in awe. When the interviewed is talking and there is no need to interject, then don't interject. Had this been one of the modern interviewers, who consider themselves stars, they would have felt the need to interject, thus stemming the flow with some unnecessary comment

Mike Leigh is an absolute genius. No more to be said.

One of my favourite scenes from that film which is silent, short, but says so much is Mark walking through Trafalgar Square on his own. An intelligent but uneducated man who is trapped in many ways and needs his own space and something more…. well that’s what I took from it lol great great film which is shot more or less everywhere I grew up..

Love Meantime. The cast are wonderful in it but Tim Roth's Colin is a great character.

Made in 1983 but incredibly relevant to Starmer's Britain. Meantime is a hidden gem of a film. My family watched it together in the 80s and we were all enthralled by it.

Jarvis looks like he needs a shave and a hot shower. It's as if he's been shipwrecked for a couple of months.
