North Korea launched an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) that flew for 86 minutes—the longest recorded duration—before landing in waters east of the country, according to South Korea and Japan. The missile, launched at a steep angle, reached an altitude of 7,000 km (4,350 miles), suggesting it could have traveled much farther on a standard trajectory. The launch, which violates UN restrictions, occurred amid worsening relations between North and South Korea and increased hostile rhetoric from Pyongyang. South Korea had previously warned that the North might fire an ICBM around the time of the U.S. presidential election on November 5.
