"Should I write a script for my presentation?" is one of the most common questions I see on social media about #HigherEducation and academic presentations. The big worry people have is that they'll sound like a robot or will sound "too scripted" if they do. Click on "SHOW MORE" below for Dr Echo Rivera's top tips!

That's why I decided to make this video, because having a script (and practicing) is a key strategy for creating an effective and engaging presentation. One of the main ways to avoid #DeathByPowerpoint is to have a script AND practice it the right way. Watch the video to learn more.

If you're like most academics, scientists, evaluators, and researchers that I work with, you're worried that having a script or practicing too much will either be a waste of time, or will make you an awkward presenter. But having a script and practicing it are key public speaking strategies. There is no such thing as practicing too much, and it's really important you have a script so your presentation hits all your key points, is organized, easy to follow, and discourages you from going on tangents. This video goes with my other video about a stress-free presentation workflow. That video explains how and when to fit in these practicing types when working on your research or scientific talk. #DrEcho

Thank you. This is a very concrete idea on how to rehearse. I will definitely show this to my students.

Really great video. On my first view, I found this too much. But for months, I sucked on presentation. Finally, when I applied these techniques, things went awesome.

Thank you so much for sharing! I've always been one of those people who says I hate scripting/practicing because I felt like it made me sound robotic. But after watching this I realized I always do those first types of practice as I go and then a run through once. So I did script/practice I just don't like doing a bunch of full run throughs!

This is so helpful for me as a PhD student doing oral presentations and teaching! It was cool to note that because I started out a few years ago terrified of presenting in class or at conferences I'd already intuitively started incorporating some of these practice elements (scripting, talking to my computer, and timed practice) because they made public speaking a less terrifying prospect for me. However, this fills in some things I realize are totally needed to make me feel less stilted/scripty and more confident, espec using practice sheets during timed practice, and the dress rehearsal (which I usually do sitting on the couch - no more!). Srsly thanks for being awesome and sharing this stuff 🥰

I love your presentation, it was dynamic and funny. The most impressive: it was done with Powerpoint :o.

I have definitely come around to the idea that scripting is better, at least for professional presentations. I practiced my TEDx talk at least 30 times out loud. Part of that was rewriting it. Part was also memorizing. But, at the end, what makes it good (as people tell me) is that it looks "effortless" and "natural." A lot of effort to make it look effortless. LOL.
