IMHO this is probably the most spot on review of the RXa8a to date . On mine, I also prefer the YPAO equalization set to the flat response curve. Despite my love of Yamaha's build and sound quality. I do wish they would put a greater priority on getting their firmware updates out. I am not a big fan of being an UN-paid Beta tester for a $3k plus receiver.

This is a very well done review being a Avantage user for 2 years+.Shane hit it spot on. Agree also on Dynamic set to MAXIMUM and YPAO "On, along with Audiohilics recommended setting.
Importantly, Audiohilics also recommended EXTRA BASs set to Off because otherwise it'll do something to the low bass extension and limit your quality bass experience. I've played with that back and forth and completely agree with Gene's assessment.

I would also add to Shane's assessment of playing around with PEQ. I'd say you must tweak and set your Gain up a couple of DBs from bands 1-7 for ALL your channels. Then see for yourself and results are transformational compared to any of the preset EQ For example:
Go to 13:06. Then set the first 4 bands to +3.0db and leave Q as is because that's wayyy to complicated and advanced to get into. Finally set and also increase the last 3 bands to between +4db and +5db. Listen, listen, listen to before and after!!! You can play with that but definitely increase from the stock 0db gain EQ setting. Then you can increase your subwoofers 1 and 2 gain about +3 for all the 4 EQ bands.. Again that's give and take..
Please note I did all these tweaks after of course running YPAO and verifying my that all speaker levels were accurate with a decibel meter.

I'd say results can vary somewhat depending on everyone's speaker system. But regardless by tweaking as mentioned more or less, I can assure you results will be transformational compared to any "stock" EQ Preset setting... Bon appetite and hope it helps and also throw me some pointers upon your experiences or something I'm missing...

I own the RX-A6A, a step down from the flagship reviewed here, and couldn't be happier with my purchase, of course this was after doing the very recent firmware update that gives you 4K 120hz, 8K 60hz support.
I'm running the system with out of box settings, I'll run the calibration at some point down the road.
But very happy so far.

Always had Yamaha, RX-860 Aventage befor & for now since one Year ago my RX-A6A and I am happy. It is a great AV-R. Build my Speaker Setup from 5.1 to 7.1.2 for now to 9.2.4 plus a Rotel RB 1552 MK II Sounds great, I love the Tones of Features and the Sound who comes out fpr Decades.

Great review Shane! I still have and love my RXA3070. Compared to the other mainstream flagships where would you rank the Yammy?

This receiver is truly a masterpiece. (this unit is not meant for the average user) This is only for those who clearly understand what an HT receiver is. the A6A is literally identical to it. I live in the UK but the weight of my A6A and measurements are the same as the A8A. they either made a mistake. because my unit weighs 47 pounds without the box. total weight is 52
pounds. it is recommended to listen to Audioholics to get to know all the details. this unit can easily reach 176 WPC at 8 ohms. making it the most powerful unit currently available even in June 2023.

Thanks for the quality review, but I have a bone to pick.

Why do reviewers always set everything to flat or make minimum adjustments, or just let room correction do the calibration?

My Aventage out of the box after YPAO sounded gross, but after really dialing it in with the parametric EQ and turning levels up and letting my ears calibrate the sound, it’s excellent.

Also, all (most of) those DSP’s are great, and you “would never use them?” Definitely feels like there’s too much snobbery associated with this hobby nowadays.

Is there some sort of stigma associated with self adjusting and listening to other sound modes outside of pure direct for music?

Excellent review!!!! Good idea to cite Audioholic's recommendation for the impedance setting. I'm seriously considering replacing my older Yamaha AV receiver to either an RX-A4A or A6A. The newest firmware update is version 1.96 per Yamaha's website.

I just ordered the Yamaha a6a. I got it for $1, 200 Yamaha factory refurbished. I also got a 3-year warranty with it. Very excited because I am upgrading from a Yamaha 3070. With Wipeout being upgraded I'm hoping for much better base control.

The Yamaha receivers got a software update in Aug/2022 that enabled the VRR and ALLM feature (HDMI 2.1)
