Scientists from NASA's Kepler mission have been busy recently. The team has announced the discovery of Kepler-22b, its first confirmed planet in the habitable zone of its solar system, 600 light years away. They have also been combing through light data captured by the telescope and have released the latest number of planetary candidates team members have identified. Staff and scientists also got together (along with a special guest!) recently to celebrate 1,000 days of science operations by the mission.

:D what boggles my mind: who is this one person disliking the wonderful progress made by these brilliant and hard working people?

Very awesome. And thank you all you smart people, for making these discoveries possible. :D Exciting stuff.

Also, does "habitable zone" pertain purely to habitability by humans, or full stop? Because I thought that the Kepler mission was discovering planets (2326 and counting) that had the potential to sustain life?

@ThePrimusGlory @Barnicalsify the habitable zone also includes the galactic habitable zone (so the criteria astrobiologists refer to is both location within a star system and location in the galaxy). but i do agree that it is very chauvinistic and equally possible that other life have non-carbon and non-DNA based structures

@MrIcenberg 1 light year is 9 460 730 472 580 km's. Research some, before commenting

It's only 3, 524, 753, 491, 200, 000 miles away. If we listen closely we may have heard something intelligent said 600 years ago. That's helluva bad lag :(

@Hortgeek guess that's the only logical answer, or it might just be a failure to click the like button, although yours makes more sense :D
