Hi guys! This is a listening exercise for the American English tense vowel /uw/ as in YOU or COMPUTER or UBER! If you want to learn to correctly pronounce the /uw/ sound, the first step is to learn to perceive it with 100% accuracy (and this one can be especially tricky to perceive, AND to produce!)

In the video, I read 10 pairs of words- in each pair, one of them has the target /uw/ sound, and the other one has a different sound. I want YOU to figure out which is which. Check out the video to see how you do!

The answers are below-

1. two- #1 has /uw/!
2. use- #1 has /uw/!
3. school- #1 has /uw/!
4. issue- #1 has /uw/!
5. whose- #1 has /uw/!
6. Google- #2 has /uw/!
7. conclusive- #1 has /uw/!
8. movement- #1 has /uw/!
9. unusual- #1 has /uw/!
10. confusing- #1 has /uw/!

Thanks for watching! :-)

The "w" sound after "u" makes a huge difference. I used to say the words you mentioned without adding that extra "w" sound and I always felt that somthing was missing. Thank you for clearing up my confusion !:-) I wish you knew how valuable your lessons are!

I repeated your list a few times and that /uw/ sound (with the "w" at the end) is very apparent, something I've not noticed before.
