I'm a big fan of Spyder as my python IDE. However, some folks like to use Jupyter notebooks or the powerful and free Google Colab. This video shows how to use these alternatives and talks about pros and cons of each like free GPUs vs a built-in variable explorer

Nice. As a uni teacher myself I have been using jupyter notebooks for some time but last year or two moved over to Jupyter-lab for a more encompassing file and window management. There are a whole range of short-commands which might take care of some of the variable info as well, but the main benefit for me is the ability to include markdown cells with descriptions before and after each cell.
You probably already know all this, just wanted to add it to the comments. Great stuff as always!

VScode jupyter extension has a nice variable explorer by default.
