Am i the only one that never had problems with that level? I figured out the secret of it really quickly(these guys aways spawn behind you in the same terrain). You just need to keep changing terrains to get away from them and kill them little by little. And yes, eventually they will try to surround you, but at least to me, when that time came, i only needed to kill one or two more enemies, which meaned i could just use a weapon with any characther except mario, and then use mario's hammer. It's not that hard...
Also, you forgot this:how was i actualy supposed to know that i need to make bowser hit these freaking rocks so i can kill him? The game dosen't tell you at all
