There are few substances in nature, as well as large number of substances we can’t directly use. In order to separate them we can use different methods. Here we have tried to separate clear water from muddy water. When this mixture is allowed to stand, settle down at the bottom , the process is called Sedimentation.
The Chemical Alum added to muddy water to speed up the process of Sedimentation. Alum attaches itself with mud water and make them heavy so they settle down fast. The process is called Loading. So Loading is a process in which heavy particles settle down at the bottom of the container and water comes up.
The process of separation of the clear liquid layer without disturbing the settled solid/sediment is called Decantation. Mud which is at the bottom are known as sediments and the clear liquid above mud is called Supernatant liquid.
After getting the suspension, we can separate the clear water using filter paper called filtration. The mud that is left on the filter paper is known as Residue.
