I spent almost 10 years drinking alcohol, and it caused a lot of damage in my life.

I was in and out of A.A. meetings, constantly trying to quit — but the addiction had already taken root long before I realised.

The problem is, I missed the signs.

If you catch them early, you can fix the issue before it gets worse.

So here are 3 signs you might be addicted to alcohol — even if things look fine on the surface.

1️⃣ You often drink more than you planned to. Maybe you tell yourself you’ll just have two drinks, but it ends up being four. Or you only plan to drink Friday night, but it turns into a whole weekend binge. I used to say “just one” all the time — and then wake up with no memory of what happened. That wasn’t rare. That was normal for me.

2️⃣ You’re secretly planning your drinks. You might be thinking things like, “I’ll have one here… then another there…” You plan around drinking. Maybe you sneak one in at your kid’s football game. Or crack open a beer in the garage when no one’s watching. I did this more times than I can count.

3️⃣ You don’t feel like socialising unless alcohol is involved. If you're only comfortable when alcohol is around — or you feel anxious, awkward, or uninterested without it — that’s a big red flag. The more I drank, the more I built my life around people who drank like me.
