You wouldn't want them to nip you on a sensitive part, such as the lip or eyelid! One of my fancy rats once nipped me on the eyelid, out of curiosity or playfulness. No blood was drawn, but boy, did it hurt! I have recently acquired two new girls, approximately 6 weeks old. One of them is a red-eyed albino, and she is so skittish that she is scared of her own shadow. She still has not gotten used to me. I hardly see her, as she hides away underneath her bedding. The other one has just finished with the 'test biting' phase, in which newly-acquired rats bite, sometimes hard (but not out of aggression), to gauge the trust of their new owner. It is sort of like a 'rite of passage' ritual. Now she likes to sniff me and play with the drawstrings of my hoodie. She now takes her favourite food (almonds) from my hand without the initial fear she had. I will still have to work on the albino one, but she'll soon come round. For some reason, albinos tend to be more skittish. Some say it is because their eyesight is not as good as 'regular' rats.
