How Does Ultrakill's Shotgun Work?

How does ultrakill's shotgun work? I will try to see how it works and if we could make it in real life with engineering.

Music Used:
Terraformer - Rimworld
Seasons turn - Rimworld
Shadow Work - Rimworld
Space Town Dub - Everhood

I am more or less new to youtube so expect a lot of mistakes, constructive criticism is very welcome. (don't be mean about it though)

The shotgun in ultrakill for me is probably the coolest concept of a weapon

I don't know what upsets me more- the fact that you're playing without the style meter or without the weapon HUD.

(also, in universe, the reason why explosions look like that is because V1 has the graphics set on PS2 for the sake of processing power- it is generally, safe to assume that the explosions are as we see them in real life- it's just V1s' perspective that changes this.)

good vidbeo. please do splaboon next

Shotgun was hell of a weapon to try and make work.

I also wanted to say Thank You all for the support
I will be hosting a Live Q and A thing when we hit 1, 000 subs (probably later this week)
so Look out for that

to me the shotgun is just a superheated blow dryer that goes kaboom

So, something missing from most of this: Infinite Ammo. If there's a slug involved in each shot, that means limited ammo.

I'm not an engineer, so 90% sure this couldn't actually work in reality, but something that feels at least *closer* to reality AND still works within the games lore and logic: Compressed Air.
Each "core" is a container, with an air compressor built into the gun and heating coils surrounding the cores. Air is drawn in at such high pressures that it almost becomes "solid" - not literally solid, but enough air compressed into one space that it stays together for a while after firing. It then gets superheated to near plasma, then the front of the core opens and the air is expelled - staying together as "pellets" of plasma for a bit. Would also explain why the shotgun is short-range, as the plasma would quickly cool down as it traveled. the main "bulk" of the gun would then be a mix of power supply (for the air compressor) and insulation (both ensuring enough heat is retained to create plasma, as well as ensuring the user isn't burned just by holding the gun)

The "Core Eject" would then be literal - instead of firing the gun, you instead eject a primed core in its entirety: a sealed metal slug filled with superheated plasma, that you then breach by shooting it causing it to explode, similar to putting a hole in a deoderant can or Propane tank. This would... again add the "limited ammo" issue back in, but hey: it's closer I think?

As mentioned: highly unlikely this could actually work. BUT it works well enough with a mix of fuzzy-logic physics and game lore that I feel this is probably close to what Hakita intended.

I'd love to see your interpretation of the railcannon

Huh, that's a unique interpretation. The way I thought of it was that it worked by pulling in the air by its barrel and then superheating and pressurizing it into a projectile form to be launched like some actual air cannons we have in real life but with super heat applied. I never thought to factor in how projectile boosting would work irl because it's a mechanic that spawned from a glitch and is more rule of cool without any more deeper implications intentionally. Same with design elements like the pellets being a HotMetalOrange. The core explosions I thought were because impact with dense objects caused it to slightly bend and pop like a can full of air that's also super hot so easier to pop, and when it pops it releases super heated gas instantly causing the Boom. But I really like your idea about the experimental heat rounds. Sounds like something you could actually build, and it goes to lengths to actually explain projectile boosting.

The Lasergun or the rocket launcher might be more painful for you

To better explain the cores exploding you could say “due to the high instability of the coolant, when I high enough kinetic force is applied a chain reaction in the coolant causes a large chemical explosion to happen” in more of a lore entry type way

Loving these videos! Would you go into the physics of the Jackhammer? It may be very simple to do

i would personally speculate that the projectiles might be some kind of plasma instead of a bullet

this would explain the part of why the description says unlimited ammo due to it just being able to use air to create that plasma
and it could maybe also explain the volatility of parried shots
(altho that could be just explained by video game logic)

there could also still be some kind of railgun like system in place to guide the plasma shots as well as the cores

this kinda falls apart if you think about underwater levels but maybe thats also just video game logic bc its cool

I can't wait for the other weapons.
YOU BETTER INCLUDE ALT VARIENTS

next series you make them in real life (include extensive instructions for the explosive part)

i think you should include a bit more of a respectful weapon footage, specifically when explaining some visible part of it 😅

for me i believe its just plasma, and uses heat to turn the atmosphere in the barrel into plasma where magnets then are used to propel and confine the plasma, which would also explain its short range. the cores i also believe are just heating elements or heat container which could be heated by induction but more as an area to start making the air into plasma. when using core eject, the magnets launch the core which has plasma in it so when you shoot it it explodes.

worth noting that the shotgun design is based off the DP-12

Really wondering how the sawgun's saws orbit the magnet so neatly, I assume they are some kind of superconductors :)

when I saw "it fires heat" my first thought was "compression wave"
