The code makes it clear that it started as an experiment in Java. Just a bunch random inconsistencies everywhere. It’s charming, if not a bit confusing.

Only the OGs remember the 1.8 "Super Secret Settings" that showed every single shader in the game

the thing is that this game has been developed over a decade and a half. so there’s a ton of things that were added at different times. potion effects (like poison) were added way after fire damage mechanics, so when they made the potion effect system, they couldn’t make the fire work like that, because fire was already implemented.

The more weird part is, in previous versions you could access these shaders via the „super secret menu“ that was in the pause menu. They removed it later

i like that fire is an entitiy because its a threat in its own way, you could inflict fire on a zombie and that zombie now has a chance to inflict fire on you, it behaves like real fire and i think thats awesome

If you hop into a creeper when in spectator mode, it turns everything green and allows you to see in the dark.

I think the fire and poison makes sense. Fire was in minecraft way before potion effects.

The reason why fire is coded differently is because not only was fire added first, it also has different interactions. Fire burn duration is also affected by fire interaction time, and fire spread.
Fire is a much more complex mechanic than 'red poison' in minecraft.

Correction: fire is not a entity, it is data on an entity, but as the player's data can't be set with commands the arrow thing is necessary

The fire poison thing is due to them being added years apart. Fire was added very early when it was just Notch, but by the time Poison and other potion effects were added in Beta 1.8, the Adventure Update, he had hired on Jeb and a few others as well

Minecraft is a profoundly weird codebase. I briefly tried modding, and was cursed with the knowledge that the load screen on startup is the game reminding itself that all the items exist and creating example versions in memory. *And every single one is individually hardcoded.*

Poison and other potion effects are viewed as magic so they bypass armor defenses excluding enchantments. Fire meanwhile can be dealt by natural sources such as lava, so that's why armor and enchants block it. Since poison is uncommon in Minecraft and fire is common, it's why the two are still balanced this way.

Some real spagetti code, Valve would be proud.

to be clear fire is not it’s own entity it’s a separate trait on every entity that can be on fire. it is done differently from potion effects because potion effects weren’t planned at all when fire was added.

Whenever you ask yourself: "Why?" in relation to Minecraft, the answer is always:

"Notch"
