Why I Divided by 2 ? - How a Ft-lb Works - Mini V-12 on the Dyno

I received a lot of comments on the mini V12 Dyno video on how my math was completely wrong and I didn't know what I was talking about.

I show you here in this video why when calculating a foot pound measuring at 6 in distance from the crankshaft you divide by 2 to get a foot pound.

Whatever measurement you are getting at the 6-inch mark is going to be double the measurement at the 12-inch mark.

So if you put 1 lb of force at the 12-inch mark that would be double at the 6-inch mark.

Hope that helped everybody make more sense of it.. the math definitely seems counterintuitive.

If you have a 12-inch (1-foot) bar with 1 ft-lb of torque applied, and you measure the force at the 6-inch (0.5-foot) mark, you would measure twice the force compared to the 12-inch mark. Here's why:

*Torque (𝜏) is defined as: τ=F×r
where:
• F is the force applied,
• 𝑟 is the distance from the pivot point to where the force is applied.
Given:
• τ = 1ft-lb,
• r=0.5ft (6 inches).
• Rearranging for 𝐹:
F= r/τ = 1ft-lb/0.5ft =2lbs*

So, you would measure 2 pounds of force at the 6-inch mark.

Its like this when you torque things down as well. If you put say 10lb of force on 12" ratchet, then add another foot to your ratchet @2' now youd have 20 lbs of force applied while using the same force of 10lbs to turn it.

That is next level Matt..
The manufacturer is deeply indebted to your enginunity. These videos stop the scrolling for multiple views.

Great explanation! Thank you for taking time to let people learn and better understand something. All too often people try to act 'superior' when they know something that another doesn't, or get combative assumingthat a questionis a challenge or insult. I believe that is called 'gate-keeping' and/or arrogance. Matt is a great guy though, 🤙👍😎

Oh man I gotta say interesting stuff even though I’m horrible at math. You lost me at “In the video where”. 😂

After hearing that you dyno’d your mini V12 you had me. Everything else was irrelevant

Carnage! Great video with some science.

Thanks. I never understood how torque was measured until now.

Funny seeing my own comments in this short :D Yet the explanation is a bit muddy. I guess there is a weight at the far end of the ruler, right?

Engine power and strength specifications are always not true until you try them the truth is the V12 needs an upgrade and much more

Yep, basic physics. Torque and leverage.

Did you hire the blind surfer Pete Gustin to do the intro?

you didn't divide by 2, you multiplied... by 1/2 feet. Torque (ftlb) = Force(lb) * Distance(ft). The units are there for a reason

Don’t ever math me again. That wasn’t cool.
