Hey! i've also read A Little Life a while ago and i wanted to share my thought on your comment of the book, since it made me rethink my whole experience with the book. So i get that we all have our personal preference on what should happen in a book (probably preferably some kind of happy ending), but you could try to look at it with other glasses in the sense that this is exactly what this book is trying to convey. We are quite literally following his whole life in hopes of some kind of wholesome, fulfilling or happy ending but in reality life doesn't always get mentally better for everyone, even if it seems that things surrounding the person are getting better such as their career, ambitions, relationships etc. The impact of childhood trauma is not talked about/investigated enough and i think this book is so amazing so showcase exactly the frustration you deal with when it comes to this kind of genre/case. Also don't forget that he is developing, he was trying, he had better periods. Maybe he wasn't succeeded to the capacity we expected, and that might be a disappointment. But i'd like to think that, the disappointment we feel is exactly the authors whole point of the book. In conclusion i think it's rare to encounter these kind of feelings in a book, it quite literally makes you feel everything; sad, disgusted, happy, angry, empathy and never satisfied.

Also it's a bit crazy to me that you didn't cry at all. The tears ran down my cheeks at times i didn't even realised because i was so captivated. I don't know but i think that you might have been a bit too angry with the story to just be captivated in it, to the point where you aren't having any thought about it as a book but just reading.

Anyways i just wanted to share my though, i think i've never commented on any video on youtube before but this really made me think and i wanted to share my thought. Love having your vlogs in the background while i knit/crochet <3

Agree with your thoughts on A Little Life, it seemed unrealistic that the main character never improved and suffered despite all the love he received. It was depressing and underwhelming. I really wanted to like it too...

I absolutely respect your opinion on the book but I have to say, that it is unfortunately realistic that a person does not recover from such traumas. Our society has this picture, that it will always get better at some point but for some people it is just not the case. Like for example in the case of Jude, the way he grew up was terrible and he never experienced a a loving family until his late twenties. So there was nobody in his life when he was a child and teenager, so the moments when you start to learn about who you are, that told him that he didn't deserve what happened to him. I think it is just difficult to judge someone (especially in real life!) when they don't recover from a trauma because we never experienced it ourselves. But I understand, that the book makes you very very uncomfortable because it makes you realize how fucked up the world really is. After all the autor speaks about a lot of subjects that are often hidden, like pedophilia, child prostitution, sexual assault, abusive relationships and self harm and I agree that its a lot in one book but it is nevertheless important to write about it instead of hiding it because we prefer to see only the good things in life.

Speak your truth on that terrible book!! You are so correct about it being trauma porn. My hot take is that it is also weird that it was written by a straight woman... That book gives us all these gay abusive traumatic relationships and it just leaves extra bad taste in my mouth when I think about who wrote it

I kept looking at that book every time I went to Waterstones but now I've decided not to bother. Sounds awful!
