Rules:
1. Only my starter in battle
2. No items in battle, except held items
3. No glitches, exploits, or save states
4. No movepool evasion-boosting moves before level 100*

Rule details:
-- I make no attempt to have the exact same rule details between generations.
-- I am allowed to manipulate my starter
-- I play the game at 4x game speed
-- For fair comparisons my Pokemon have perfect (or near perfect) DVs / IVs
-- I am allowed to catch HM users - I can use all field moves
-- Evasion boosting is allowed if the move is not obtained from the Pokemon’s movepool. For example, using Mimic or Mirror Move to boost evasion is allowed.
-- Surge's trash-can-puzzle is automatically solved
-- The bike is allowed in gen1 & 4, banned in gen2, and allowed only to bypass terrain in gen3
-- Saving between league members is allowed
-- I can pause the game and timer to take breaks
-- Items obtained with the ability Pickup can only be used if the starter obtained them
-- The footage is sped up & slowed down to match the pace of my narration

These Rule details apply only to generation 1:
-- All battle-mechanic glitches are allowed (glitches that occur outside of battle are banned)
-- In generation 1, I'm allowed to skip Marowak with the Poke Doll

If you didn’t read these rules and left a comment. Thanks for helping with the algorithm.

Juan's thoughts: Onix bad, scott good

Venomoth Fact #35: Venomoth first discovered what it feels like to be disappointed in someone when they told Onix to hit them with everything they've got.

26:47 Now Im imagining an Onix with a pink ribbon tied to its horn. You’re welcome for that image.

You can tell a Pokemon is going to be bad when Scott starts by saying he'll be comparing it to the BABY Pokemon. Oof.

Something I really like about these videos is that every property of the game is relevant. Take exp groups, for example. To everyone that isn’t doing a speedrun in this format all they mean is how long it will take to grind the mon up or it just means nothing because rare candies to stay on level par. In these runs, it’s essential. Every piece of the game is. When moves are available, gym order and significant trainers, where items are, it all factors in for getting a good time. I really appreciate that and it makes for an interesting viewing experience which keeps my attention when I watched the entire emerald playlist.

1:22 I absolutely love how you can get a good sense of what a horrible pain this challenge will be from what's going on in the background while you talk - Onix struggling to kill a single Sentret, missing over half of his Tackles, and even a critical isn't enough to not make it a 3-shot.

21:30 always love the mental image of a rock/ground pokemon using dig while surfing. Faints at the barest squirt of water, but unflinchingly burrows beneath the waves to surprise the enemy from below!

I never commented much, especially early but I remember scrolling thru YouTube for JRose11, MahDryBread and Nuzlocke stuff when you uploaded your first video. And I subscribed and the evolution over the years and months is astounding brother, glad you’re doing well and keeping at it!

My theory is that Jasmine’s Steelix has Sunny Day because it was supposed to be the other “weather” move, Sandstorm, and it was just programmed incorrectly

I love runs like these where it feels like solving a very complex puzzle to squeeze out every ounce of efficiency!

Here's my theory on Jasmine's steelix, as we know that the steel type is introduced in this gen, sunny day may be there to reduce the potential water damage (players likely can link the thought of steelix being an evolution of Onix and remember it's water weakness) and "reward" players if they understand the weaknesses of the steel type, which one of it is fire, which gets further boost by sunny day. Though u have to likely face opposing super effective hits from rock throw, making it a high risk high reward option if steelix opts to use sunny day

Gonna repeat what I said on the live version, seeing as that got privated :P

When dealing with the rare instance of early game grind, have you ever considered Unown ruins? You'd have to do a single puzzle, but they're all frail, give static exp and pretty decent ATK and SP ATK exp. Yes Hidden Power is random, but given how they can't really give or take hits...

It’s because it’s meant to be a gen 1 early game first boss rather than a truly playable character. It’s actually good game play. Even taking bulbasaur into gym 1 with just leach seed it can wear you out if you don’t know what you’re doing. It’s meant to teach type effectiveness and how to train; and limit most players from coming in average level of 6/7.

Rough challenge today, but it's always nice to see how you develop the strategies. Looking forward to the streams too!

I've been slowly making my way through all of the backlog since I started watching several months ago, and can I just say it's amazing to see how far everything has come from your insight into the game, the overlay providing useful information to the viewer and the player, and just the amount of research and analysis you put into planning runs after the initial one.

There's honestly been so many moments where I wonder about something that's in the current overlay and then when I go looking for it, it's just not there in the older videos which just makes me appreciate the newer versions of the overlay even more.

Sleeps through the re-upload status. See the update in the community tab when I open up YouTube. Checks channel. And there's Onix pain waiting for me. Good timing is good timing.
