Lewis, shrimps and prawns are related, but they aren't the same. Also, it's red beans and rice, not peas and rice. Finally, cornbread isn't cake. It's made with cornmeal, and can be sweet-ish or savory.

I'm from New Orleans and our food hits different. I'm cooking cabbage, cornbread and baked chicken today for my family. I can't wait until you get to the US and judge the AWESOME food for yourself. YOU WILL NOT BE DISSAPPOINTED!!

Where's the hush puppies!?!?!? These Brits are like "oh my God!!!! This food actually has flavor!!" better than beans and mash. They got the BASIC southern food. There is so much more. I used to live in Lafayette, Louisiana and I'll tell you nothing better than Cajun food.

Its not rice and PEAS, its rice and BEANS. Usually kidney beans.
The cornbread = we will put butter on it and eat it straight, put it in the gumbo and mix it in, eat it plain on the side with the entree…..its good enough to eat it any way you want it.

Born and raised in Louisiana and the “Monday special” almost everywhere is red beans and rice. It became a tradition because Monday was wash day and you could put on a pot of beans to slow cook all day while you were doing the wash. I have 2 ways to make cornbread. One is slightly sweet and the other is not. Depends on what I’m making to go with it. We crumble our cornbread on our red beans and mix it all together. The slow cooking of the beans along with the meat added to them makes the “sauce” thick. I can honestly say that you can go in ANY spot that sells food from a gas station to a 5 star restaurant in Louisiana and have the best meal you can imagine. We know how to cook. If you’re coming to the USA and want to experience food - Louisiana is a must visit!

when people say 'spicy' for Louisiana food, it means that spices were used to make it flavorful, not that it's peppery hot... you add that later to your taste level with 'hot sauce'...

corn bread is the bread with the meal. it's a soda bread from ground corn. often slightly sweet and buttery. jalapeños and cheddar are fantastic blended in. that flavor combo is great in southern biscuits too. we make biscuits by many fashions for the fine dining scene

Cornbread can be made sweet, or with buttermilk, making it savory. You can put kernels of corn in the cornbread, crackling. jalapenos to make it Mexican, There are several ways to make cornbread.

Hint: marinate your chicken in a brine (salt & water, maybe buttermilk). Doesn't matter what you do with it - fry it, bake it, it'll be juicy and delicious.

I always added a bit of sugar and chopped jalapeños in my corn bread. Spread some butter on it like a muffin.😋

Hey Lewis!! I lived in Louisiana, we had a neighbor who taught my Dad to make Red beans and rice.(Mom was bed ridden due to high risk pregnancy) It's made with cottage ham, onions, red beans, celery tops, garlicc& bay leaf. Served over rice. Cornbread is served with, like you would have bread with most meals. Also add Andouille sausage. Gumbo is like a soup you toss in whatever you like. Chicken, crab, lobster, rice, carrots, Andouille sausage, shrimp, ocra, celery, onion, garlic. It's delicious. We also had a neighbor who worked on the docks who brought home fresh crabs. We would steam in a huge pot, they would dump them in center of the table onto taped down newspaper and we would pig out!! Also Tobasco is the original Louisiana Hot Sauce. You shake out few drops to alot of drops to taste. We put it on everything. Eggs, soups, chili, gumbo, beans and rice, Jambalaya, Crawfish Etouffee, Po boys, even cornbread with diced onions in the batter!! Cant wait until you try for yourself!!! With coffee we'd have beignets 😋

Cornbread with honey and butter. Dessert. But Cornbread also goes great with chili, soup, rice and beans, all kinds of stuff. Absolutely dip it or crumble it on top. Good by itself too. Now I’m hungry lol

Cornbread is best when crumbled into beans, greens, soups, stews, chili and used to sop up gravies and any kind of condiments. By itself try it with butter and honey. Yum!

Red beans and rice is a Monday dish because Monday used to be laundry day, so the red beans would be put on the night before so no cooking would be needed.
