▪︎ (Ricinus communis) Castor Bean in Spurge Family (Euphorbiaceae) Castor is indigenous to southeastern Mediterranean Basin, East Africa & India, but is widespread throughout tropical regions (& widely grown elsewhere as an ornamental plant).
Joints of hollow stem, stalks & leaves are reddish to purple. 6 - 11 lobed, palmate leaves with uneven serrated edge, are also red or colored & often have a blue-gray bloom. There is also a green variety. Flat seeds are in a seedpod that explodes when ripen.
All top of stem & stalks are inflorescence with Male - & Female flowers. Female flowers are fuzzy red structures at top of flower spike with Male flowers positioned on lower half & have conspicuous yellow anthers.
Its seed is Castor Bean, which despite term is not a bean (as it is not seed of a member of Family Fabaceae).
Castor seed is source of castor oil, which has a wide variety of uses. Seeds contain between 40% & 60% oil that is rich in triglycerides, mainly ricinolein. Seed also contains ricin, a highly potent water-soluble toxin, which is also present in lower concentrations throughout plant.
Plant known as 'False Castor Oil Plant' (Fatsia japonica) Ginseng Family (Araliaceae) is not closely related.
