#shorts #geography Have you ever wondered why on most maps, there's always one country that appears nonexistent?
Well this place is known as Western Sahara, and to understand why it always appears gray on a map, we have to go back to the late 19th century (1884). At this point, almost all of Africa was claimed by European powers, and what today is known as western Sahara, was a colony of Spain called Spanish Sahara.
Fast forward almost 100 years, and the Spanish Sahara remains the only Colony in Africa that hasn’t yet gained its independence. Along with the Spanish, Morocco and Mauritania also claimed all of Western Sahara.
When Spain finally departed their colonial forces from the territory, the native people in Western Sahara, called the Sahrawi people, proclaimed their independence, and established the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic. The newly liberated land was then invaded by Morocco, which took control of more than 80% of Western Sahara.
Because of the conflicting borders and the limited recognition of the Sahrawi Arab democratic republic the territory is colored gray on most modern data maps.
