Icom has created the CS-705 software for your IC-705 - its based on an old enough version of windows that it will work PERFECTLY on WINE. So let's get it installed. (it works on windows too!)

👉 Commands:
sudo adduser $USER dialout
sudo apt install wine
unzip Cs705_ver###.zip
cd Cs705_ver###
wine setup
reboot
ls -al ~/.wine/dosdevices

I haven't used Wine in ages, it's working great these days by the look. Thank you for the tutorial!

Never tried loading via WINE, but often thought about trying it. Glad to see it working

One of the things I love to do with the memory channels on the 705 (or any HF rig with abundant memory channels, really) is to put all of the FT8 channels in a group. Then, if I'm curious about how the bands are doing, a quick spin through the FT8 channels gives me a good idea if things are lighting up or not. Of course, it doesn't have to be the FT8 frequencies, but they are a pretty good measure of activity.

Great info thanks :)
In addition if anyone is like me and doesn't like to have "icons" on the desktop, you can move the .desktop file anywhere - for example your /Tools/ folder and execute it in the command line from anywhere with "dex" (apt install dex) - should work on most debian and ubuntu based releases. 73!

Wine seems to be a neater solution than I imagined. I saw the gymnastics people were advising to to get N3FJP to run under Linux and got a bit turned off. That doesn’t look too terrible, though. And I already have a Win10 VM using virtualbox that I’ve used for DMR. Can’t really call myself a purist in that case. I think I saw a Linux/DMR vid in your new videos, going to give that a watch. 😊

I use Parallels on my iMac to run Win apps e.g. Winlink, VarAC etc. which work OK. However I can't get the Icom CS-705 to run that way. Some problem with the COM port apparently. So I followed your steps to install Wine and CS-705 in my Ubuntu, that running in a Parallals VM. It works!

Nice TO! Wine has come a long way from back in the day. I drop the "get" in the SUDO commands on my distro. Thanks for doing it the "TO way"! 73 - KF6IF

I heard that Wine wasn't very good but it seemed to work just fine.👍

I honestly don't use the software to program my IC-705. I save my data to an SD card and edit the CSV using libreoffice calc
