Hello dolls, 🌼
and welcome to "Explaining Space Age Fashion of the 1960s"!
Come with me on a far out andventure into space filled with galactic clothes and extraterrestrial style!
The 1960s were shaped and influenced by the Space Race were the US battleded the UdSSR for the first man on the moon. The Space Race took center stage in the newspapers and TV reports of the decade and soon a popcultural phenomenon was born: The Space Age!
Inspired by the future and spacetravel designers like Paco Rabanne, Pierre Cardin and André Courreges designed far out never seen before clothes made out of plastic, vinyl and metal. Chin strap hats, gogo boots and googles were must haves for the space age girls and became popular among fashionable women of the time.
Movies like "Barbarella" or "2001: A Space Odyssey" were widely successfull while the Beatles sang about a love going "Across the Universe".

Eventough Space Age Fashion wasn’t worn too much on the street it was mostly seen in films and on Fashion Runways and was a reflection of a time filled with euphoria for space and intergalactic adventures. Nowadays often referred to as retrofuturism, Space age seem so modern yet nostalgic at the same time. A Perfect blend of a time long gone and one yet to come! 🪐

Sending you dolls the biggest hug, thank you for watching! 💌

All my lovin,
xx Emma 💌

A HUGE influence on the style and popularity of Space Age fashion in the 1960's US was the TV series, 'Star Trek, ' which was originally broadcast from 1966 to 1969. The costume designer was William Ware Theiss.

Probably worth mentioning that the style was preceded in the 50’s by “atomic” design motifs and influenced by technology developed for use during WW2.

I love space age fashion and collecting space age plastic home decor. I too would like to get my hands on a Paco Rabanne chainmail dress someday.

The 60s space age or retrofuturism is such a fun aesthetic. As a sci-fi lover this video really speaks to me. If you want to get into a great film watch the Italian film The 10th Victim from 1965.

I'm trying to understand "Atomic Age" vs "Space Age." It seems like the Atomic Age clothing, home decor, and home design was 50s focused, shiny metal, sharp or sleek, bright or pastel colors (pink, mint, teal, blue, b&w, & red), and "kitschy" atom-inspired geometric prints. Space Age clothing, home decor, and home design was 60s focused, shiny plastics, round and sleek, warm colors (mustard yellow, orange, brown, green, metallics, & clear), and abstract "groovy" or psychedelic geometric prints. I do see a difference even though both eras are combined under the "mid-century" or "retro" banner, and they're often used interchangeably. I find that the Atomic Age was fueled by technological advancement and nuclear anxiety. The Space Age was fueled by acid and space travel optimism. 😅

The colors, shapes, and silhouettes of space-age fashion are amazing, although I don't know if I can pick a favorite out of these designers! My current favorite futuristic designers are Iris Van Herpen, Clara Daguin, and Ying Gao, but their work belongs in its own category!

Love the space age designs and fashion. I aways thought it would be so cool to mix modern gothic with space age decor. Please do a video for Medieval Revival!

This was so well made! I think a video on beatnik fashion or ska fashion of the 80's 90's would be fun too

My parents were hippies in this era. I saw none of this. They wore thrift clothes & painted army surplus.
