Artists Have Dumb Excuses

Why didn't your art sell at the art show? It's hard to take personal responsibility when we come up short of our expectations. But the reality is, we are often personally responsible and can grow from that realization. In this video I travel to Sarasota, FL to exhibit at the St. Armands Circle Art Festival & poke some gentle fun at the excuses that myself and other artists sometimes use to escape blaming a bad art show on ourselves.

My name is Evan Reinheimer, I am a full time artist. I travel the world using a traditional kite to lift my camera into the sky to create unique aerial photographs. This technique is called "Kite Aerial Photography." I exhibit & sell my artwork at art festivals across the USA.

This was a great reminder - Thank you for sharing!! I'm about 2 months out from the start of my short and very limited show season. Being more positive about shows and honestly life in general has been a focus for me recently.

It's certainly not easy...slipping down the slope of negativity is very easy, but the more positive I try to be, the easier it gets. Years ago, when I wasn't making sales and everything "sucked" about a show, I'd start to write down positive affirmations in the back of my sales notebook. Things like, "smile, be happy, it just takes ONE sale", etc. Planning and positivity don't hurt and can help improve your attitude. But being in a crappy mood and complaining can hurt. Good luck to all as we do our best. Yeah, some shows might still suck, but there will be others that won't!!

I try hard not to get sucked into the negative attitude you can get form other artist, and there seems to be a lot of grumpy artist out here. You just wonder "why are they doing shows". Even if I don't have great sales at a show, I always learn something new and positive, even if it's just learning doing something better in my setting up, tear down or packing up.

My gosh, I have almost the same excuses when I have bad sales days at my markets! One of my worst days was when my stall was positioned right at the far end of the market on the east side. Not just bad sales but hardly anyone even visited my stall in that location. Even people entering the market from that side just walked right past my stall like it was invisible. I have intentionally avoided that position ever since for fear of the same thing happening again (bad sales and largely being ignored by people.) I can't really say for sure if it was this particular location that caused me so much bad luck but to be on the safe side, I'll do whatever I can to avoid being stuck out in that spot again. Though yes - I must think positively and think about all the good sales days Ive had at the markets.

I try to do best can out the situation, If I know Sunday gonna rain I need to focus on every single person on Saturday because it may be the only chance that weekend. Having a good attitude is important and I try not give up until I driving away from the show. Sometimes you get that call after the show.
