Yoda wasn't added to the movie to confirm to _Luke_ that Vader was his father, as much to confirm to _the audience_ that Vader was Luke's father, as he felt that especially children would not be willing to believe that the bad guy was the good guy's dad.

I would have also liked if Vader sacrificed himself so that Luke will be forced to use his full respirator when the Imperial shuttle life support had become damaged while the hanger was exploding around them.

I'm pretty sure Lucas mentioned in a couple interviews the original idea was for Luke to turn to the dark side. The studio convinced him to change it when they suggested a darker ending would hurt toy sales.

Holy crap, can you imagine Luke putting on Vader's helmet at the end and then the credits start rolling? Reminds me of one of the original ideas for the ending of Alien: Ripley gets killed by the alien, the alien climbs into the pilot's seat, presses a button and then sends out an S.O.S. message *in Captain Dallas' voice.* Can you imagine?
