There was the Adventures in Middle-Earth 5e series as well which was awesome.

I'm definitely curious if the Warden class will be seen as an alternative to the Ranger that focuses less on spellcasting and more on things like hunting and slaying monsters with weapons.

I picked this up. The introductory price was very compelling. It should be noted that the content is balanced/designed around 2014 5E.

Note about Humblewood, they have released an PDF to their content (for free only if you purchased direct from them) that updates it to the 2024 system. I think thats super cool.

Just got the LotR book as a birthday gift. Thus, I'd appreciate a in-depth review.

The One Ring game from free league has their own engine. Lord of the Ring 5e by free league is a separate game, that they accuired after cubicle 7 lost their license

Pretty sure the other 5E LOTR, at least at first, was also set in the same time period and had similar magic restrictions. I played a Beorning who brewed mead named Beorning Glories.

I own this and have read it a couple of times. It's a great low magic setting. The rules for social encounters and the journey phase are awesome.

Depending on how easy it'll be to bring standard 5e monster's without breaking game balance could determine to me if the game could be used as a ready made low magic setting.

You most likely think of the One Ring, which is the system 5e version is port from

One thing I like about third party content is borrowing stuff from other settings and books to use in my game. I am a fan of mixing together different stuff, content like lorem characters, and so on, and what I really like is when you can take actual races four classes from other books and use them with the official stuff so that you might have the bird people from Humblewood and mix that with a robot or cyborg from dark matter and things like that. One challenge that I do have or have come across is in games such as straightway lost, which is a take on Dante's inferno in real world Renaissance Italy so it has very little actual magic and very basic classes based on 5e, and adventures in the household, which is about tiny people like pixies and fairies and brownies all living in a world just one house, so they are low magic as well but also have the issue of size difference compared to the main books. So those I've taken a look at and tried to figure out how to place them into the world of dungeons & dragons and how they might react if brought into another universe, but also have used things like the talents in the adventures in the household book that are very similar to the starting feats in 5e, so those actually can be used as a variety of feats that didn't exist in the official books. Another thing I use is a game called ordinary heroes, which is a real world like / adventure action movie type game that uses rules very similar to 5e. Because it has only 10 levels, and those levels create a slightly weaker fighting person in all of their different classes, many of those builds work as either slightly weaker main characters that are fighters or as sidekicks.

Of course there are other books that are made to work directly and specifically with 5e, but the ones that are just a little bit off these other books offer possibilities and changes and supplemental things that might actually add to the world. Imagine instead of using some homebrewed idea for a Sprite or a fairy, you just take a ferry or Sprite littering from The adventures of the household. Or if you need a bruiser bodyguard that is not as strong but he's one of the people in the party as a NPC helper you can use ordinary heroes and have that extra person that bodyguard or thug.

It would be interesting to take some of these monsters of this game. And use them in a cross plain adventure and have them show up in random places. Caged in cities or out in the wilds.

Definitely interested. I MERP'd my way through college back in the mid-90's. I dug that system and we had some great times.

I think even if you don't run a game specifically with it, it's nice to have it on DnD Beyond if that's a tool you're using for your game like I am. It's nice that people can play Hobbits again in DnD in an actual official capacity. Plus like- worst case scenario yeah you get more monsters, and maybe there are mechanics you'd like to adopt for your games. I know personally I've added a lot of my own mechanics to 5E especially when it comes to crafting and tools somewhere I feel DnD really dropped the ball.

I would love to run a campaign in the 4th age, using the chapter that Tolkien wrote to start the sequel series (which he stopped). Keep the geography and cultures, go beyond Mordor, so much to see and do!

Cubicle 7 used to have the license for Lord of the Rings RPG, but it was changed to Free League. So Cubicle 7 had the One Ring RPG 1st edition and Adventures in Middle Earth a 5e version. Free League has The One Ring RPG 2nd Edition and The Lord of the Rings RPG a 5e version of the One Ring 2nd edition.

You are thinking of Adventures In Middle Earth 5E by Cubicle 7, the previous license holders for Middle Earth RPGs. I'm not sure of all the details, but it seems like they are using the same creators, or that Free League just updated the Cubicle 7 rules. Cubicle 7 originally released an RPG called the One Ring, with a system specifically design for this setting and the accompanying themes. They then took advantage of the huge popularity of 5E and the OGL to adapt One Ring material to the 5E rule set, including the Adventuring phases and Journey rules. Free league has followed suit with a 2nd edition of the One Ring and Lord of the Ring 5E essentially being a new edition of AiME.

The One Ring is a great game, and i am glad that the 5e version is being added to DNDBeyond (which will hopefully increase the demand for the content so that more is released), but the game creators (and a lot of fans) underestimate the amount of magic Tolkien wrote into Middle-Earth. It should not be like The Forgotten Realms, but Middle-Earth is also NOT low-magic, and should include a "magic user" class.

Here are a couple quotes to support my position:

"I once knew every spell in all the tongues of Elves or Men or Orcs, that was ever used for such a purpose. I can still remember ten score of them without searching in my mind. But only a few trials, I think, will be needed; and i shall not have to call on Gimli for words of the secret dwarf-tongue that they teach to none." - Gandalf, The Fellowship of the Ring, Journey in the Dark (pg 320 of the Collectors Edition)

"Of this Order [the Istari] the number is unknown; but of those that came to the North of Middle-Earth...the chiefs were five." -Unfinished Tales, Part Four: The Istari (pg 412 of the illustrated hardback edition 2021)

So, magic and spells were common among all the races in Middle-Earth (including Orcs), even just the number of spells for keeping doors locked was much more than ten score. The five named Istari we know of (Saruman, Gandalf, Radagast, and the two Blue Wizards) were chiefs of the Istari, but many more lesser members of the order were also in Middle-Earth (presumably on missions assigned by the chiefs).

This also explains why Gandalf didn't initially know who the Necromancer was in Mirkwood. If magic and magic users are so rare, then why would Gandalf not know immediately that it was Sauron? If magic rings are all super powerful, then why leave one with Bilbo even if you don't know which it is yet? And of course, the Witch King of Angmar was called a "witch" for a reason.

There is a homebrew Istari culture one can use in their One Ring game, but I would like to see an official one added. And anyone playing the 5e conversion should not hesitate to let their players use spellcaster classes (though i would recommend a more restricted spell list).

I'd Like to see a more detailed review :)

I picked this up as a huge LOTR fan and would love to create a game based off LOTR lore.
