The comic is by Tricksywizard, go check out their website if you like it. Not an ad, just wanting to shout them out.

As the temple collapses a single clown nose honk could be heard

There's always this sort of force that bends Joke characters towards greatness... or kills them off immediately, double or nothing on that one.

I'll raise a dad joke next session in honor of Slappy.

My current character started as "what if a dwarf was afraid of metal" and now I'm the most badass artificer carpenter the land had ever seen

I started my current campaign as a mute who used meme style soundboards to communicate. This has easily been the deepest and most meaningful campaign ive ever been in.

I had a Warforged artificer in my party a good few years ago called Turnit Offandonagain who worked as a engineering droid in a big city. He became a group favourite by the end of the session and had a cameo in a prequel campaign

My favorite character to play was a joke character, a death obsessed barbarian terrified by the idea of dying peacefully.
He is now my most fleshed out and philosophical character, taking inspiration from various forms of old norse literature.

Actually, he has begun to influence me in daily life.
I started being more confident and competitive after playing him a while, and I am inches away from yelling his catchphrase "GLORYUS DEATH!" when I get hyped. I just say "gloryus" instead

I commented this on an XPtolevel3 video, but my joke character was Skeleton Archer #3. He was a skeleton created by the Animate Dead spell by a necromancer. A few minutes after he was created, a bunch of adventurers killed all the other undead and the necromancer. SA3 was able to get away, and he decided...

That what the adventures did looked like fun, so he also became an adventurer!

We had a character who started out as of the concept of a reverse Pinocchio. He was a warforged who was polymorphed into a human by his creator with a wish granting item and was HATING every second of it.

At the end of the campaign he sacrificed himself to seal away weapons that, if released into the world, would cause untold devastation.

Incredible character development over the course of the story as he came to terms with his mortality, and in the end, embraced it.

Scanlan was created as kind of a joke character, who would be mocked because of how crass and gross he was. This is absolutely true

Maybe my best character started off as a complete joke. I played a gnome bard with the goal of being as pathetic and obnoxious as possible. He was a parody of Fred Durst, so it seemed fitting. He had middling stats, which really added to the character, but I quickly tweaked him since none of the members of the party liked him. That led to a very gradual character arc that made the other members of the party care about him and made him come to terms with his own mortality. A succubus drained hundreds of years off his life, then fell in love with him. It was CRAZY while it lasted.

That last scene broke my heart. I wanna know Slappy's story.

Started a joke character that was just a bear that thought he was human. All the other players just saw a bear on two legs growling all the time. But that bear grew on the party, and eventually he was a pretty good party member that communicated telepathically with a few of the party.

One of my current characters was just a guy who was pissed at his god, so he became a cleric out of spite so he could kill him one day and claim the title. This character has grown immensely and the campaign is one of my favorites.

Some of the best characters can start small, and grow into mountains. Even if that character starts out as a little joke kitten, maybe one day it can become an acting lion. Starting with just one dimension can actually be a blessing - you are not bound by limitations or rules, and can draw the other boundaries in as you see fit and as the story grows.

Go, young one. Go to a land called Call of Cthulu, and ask them to tell you the tale... of Bonzy, the Sad Clown. A simple, straightforward, perhaps one-note character at the start... who grew into a goddamn hero.

Had a sort of dark twist on one of these.

The NPC was a goat who was awakened and granted telepathy by unknowingly making a pact with something from the far realms. Once they had the cognitive ability to recognize how humanoids treat goats they vowed to reestablish goats at their rightful place atop all other races.

He had a whole class system based around goat supremacy and was pretty speciesist about it putting canines and dragons at the bottom of the totem.

And anything you would do to a goat wether it be good or bad he would do to you.

You eat a goat, he eats you

You feed a goat, he feeds you

You scare a goat into fainting, he does the same to you. If you don’t faint he torments you until you fall asleep and rationalizes it as having exacted his justice.

You milk a goat to make cheese… well… you get the idea,

Anyways he was very stubborn and creative albeit highly irrational when it came to defending his ideology against criticism and given his high charisma both in stats, rolls, and honestly just in RP scenarios in general he became a party favorite, and a few members of the party were under the apprehension that the reality they were in wasn’t in fact real and had no impact on the real world.

So anyways Geoffrey the goat had recently revealed to them that since they are helpful to goats such as himself they can be honorarily elevated above human class to vegetation class since plants are useful to goats because goats eat plants.

And since the party didn’t believe the reality was real two of them began a competition to see what it would take to further clime the ranks of Geoffrey’s class system until one of them asked him if it was possible to become an honorary goat entirely and what that would take and he told them it requires them to treat others however those people treat goats without exception and that if you eat someone who’s eaten a goat you would permanently earn your place in the goat class.

Needless to say a session later that character found a family and their dog having a picnic and eating goat meat.

Shortly after that party member became a goat lycanthrope and gained their permanent title.

This impacted the entire course of the rest of the campaign…
