The difference is that chopping (felling) axes are light, thin and sharp, meant to penetrate crossways into wood at an angle (they will practically bounce off if you hit wood perpendicular to the grain). Double bit axes are almost exclusively for chopping.
Splitting axes are slightly heavier with a broader, wider angle between the cheeks (sides) of the axe. Meant to push fibers of wood apart on impact when splitting into the endgrain or parallel with grain from the side.
Splitting mauls are half sledgehammer, half vague triangle, and are very heavy, meant to pound heavy wedges for splitting, or for adding lots of inertia into a difficult/knotted split, but not for continuous splitting as they are very inefficient and will exhaust you prematurely.
Then you have small "boy's" axes for light jobs like delimbing small limbs or chopping small trees, pounding wedges for felling, and crafting. Same with hatchets
