I love Desperate Housewives and Carlos and Gaby are my favourite couple from the main cast. Especially in the beginning, the ideals you analysed for each of them were very prominent, their relationship was very unhealthy and neither of them was happy. But I feel like they grew and changed for the better, though they are still far from the best versions of themselves. If you ever feel like it, discussing Tom and Lynette Scavo would be very interesting as I feel almost everyone at one point or another has met lived with or dated people like them. I don't care for Lynette, but I despise Tom's character. I feel like there's no growth for him, even when life tries him and sends him signals that it's time to change, he still comes out the same on the other side.

Overall, good video. I do wish you would’ve contextualized the ideas of machismo and marianismo, as research would show they are products of European colonization.

This is such a fantastic topic. I always binge watch Desperate Housewives, I have loved that show since it came out. Gabby and Carlos were my favourite. All relationships on the show were bad in their own ways, but I just loved them both together in the end. He was sexest, controlling and violent towards Gabby, she didn't feel loved, you understand why she cheated.

I can't wait for the upcoming videos 💞

I majored in Latinx Studies at NYU where we had some really good professors and discussions. I actually did a project for a class where I researched Latina representation on film and TV. Every academic article I read discussed their representation in terms of the Madonna/wh*re dichotomy (or other similar terms). The Latina woman in the Anglo American POV started out as sexualized, spicy/spitfire, exotic, and always DTF the white man. When people said “Hey this is problematic” they went to the complete opposite end of the spectrum. This character is somehow virginal/unsexualized even though she’s a mother, instead of the love interest she’s the maid. So yes Gaby isn’t the Madonna or Marianismo figure, but she falls under the other end of the spectrum. The show introduces her as a beautiful, sexy former model who has a husband and a side piece. She stands up to Carlos like the spitfire stereotype. So that’s where Latina representation is limited. They have to show Latinas as complex character who are not one extreme stereotype or the other. Women don’t have to be one thing all the time and never change.

I like your videos.
I would like to know more about the relationship between Susan Mayer and her daughter. I watched only the first season. I liked how supportive is her daughter. Is their relationship healty? Or are there hidden negative sides of it?

hi Ana! i wanted to clarify that "machismo" is the equivalent of the anglosaxon word "sexism". English isn't my first language so I don't know if " machismo" has a different meaning in English than in Spanish but I got confused when you said that "machismo" has some good things. Maybe when you say "machismo" you mean like the typical macho attitude? Anyway, i just wanted to make that clear because from a Spanish speaking's POV it can be understood as you saying sexism has good things.

This was a great video btw, you keep me sane through quarantine xoxo
