I simply print two cardstock 8.5 x 11 sheets, one for left side and front and one for right side and back. I then use double sided rape and join two together, then join to create the box. Yes, it then has two seems, but it can be done on any printer.

Slight correction, the manufacturing including packaging was done by Nintendo themselves and not 3rd party developers 🙂

In the NES era, Nintendo would do the manufacturing for all releases. Not the developers of publishers.

Why would you need a license for releasing a game on Nintendo? Or any other consoles from them? I mean if you made a movie do you need to acquire some sort of license to play it on a VCR? What about if you create something on a PC or for a PC do you need some sort of license for that? So why would you need a license to publish your game on a console? And a game that you actually made? Unless Nintendo is afraid of competition that's the only other reason they don't want that?

The design should allow for the join to terminate at the back like the original box. Looks messy having the white paper visible from the front.
