Wushan County is located on the eastern edge of Chongqing, in the heart of the Three Gorges Reservoir Area, and is known as the "gateway to the northeast of Chongqing". Located on both sides of the Yangtze River Wuxia, it borders Badong County in Hubei Province to the east, Jianshi County in Hubei Province to the south, Fengjie County in Chongqing City to the west, and Wuxi County in Chongqing City and Shennongjia Forest District in Hubei Province to the north. As of 2021, Wushan County covers an area of 2958 square kilometers and governs 26 townships (streets) and 340 villages (residences). At the end of 2022, the permanent population of Wushan County was 463500, with an urbanization rate of 45.70%

The airport is located at the border of Wushan and Fengjie counties, 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) from the county seat, and mainly serves tourists to the nearby Three Gorges region. Construction began on 20 April 2015, and the airport was opened on 16 August 2019. It is the fourth airport with regularly scheduled passenger service in the municipality of Chongqing. It is located 350 kilometres (220 mi) from central Chongqing.
