Group of alumni, friends, family and current students sent videos in from all over the world took the time to send a message of support to Dr. Randy Beckum. Randy has been an incredibly influential person to many of us as a chaplain, a professor, a mentor, a classmate, a friend, or a father. Randy has challenged, inspired, guided, befriended, and broken bread countless times for us and may others.

While listening to your sermon, I remembered a story that my grandfather told me about my great grandfather.  In a little town near Austin, Tx., my grandfather 's family had neighbors who always threw the left over garbage and scraps from butchering meat over the fence onto their property. My grandfather asked his father, " what are you going to do about it, shouldn't we just throw it back or something?"  My great grandfather would just clean up the garbage every day and take it elsewhere, or burn it - never saying anything to his neighbor.  My grandfather was amazed, but helped his father with the task.
Many years later when my grandfather, Floyd Perry, was fired as the Supt. of Schools in Round Rock, Texas because he suggested integrating the schools in 1957 instead of keeping a separate, " run down "school for the minority students - he was able to turn his cheek and go on with his life.  I am proud of both of these men and the legacy that they left to our family.

I just learned of your existence through facebook, but I have struggled with the idea that so many people who call themselves Christians in our country seem to think that guns, revenge and war seem to define patriotism in America as well as their Faith.  My brother and I have begun to call ourselves ' Followers of Christ" because we cannot bring ourselves to be a part of this type of group. We were raised in the Baptist church, I graduated from Baylor Univ, but it is as if the church has walked away from the path that I was pointed toward from birth.  You seem to be a person who is striving to be truly Christlike in his words and actions. I am so grateful that God has placed you on this new path for me.  God's blessings to you, Randy.

It's hard to believe that this is the same guy who used H. Orton Wiley's Theology book to heold the accelerator down for cruise control in a college van in the 1970's! Actually, the influence of Dr. Gerard Reed, traveling with us and causing us to probe our consciences and souls seems to have lived on in all of us who shared that van. The traditions of the last couple hundred years should not obscure the faith of Christ and that of the believers of the first century. Thanks to all of you who are supporting Randy.
