One thing about rice or pasta is that it's safe if the ferrets accidentally wind up eating any of it, but also they won't _want_ to eat it. Which is why despite similar behavior, you can't give rats a pool of pasta or rice because rats do normally eat grains, so they'll recognize it as food and overeat. Likewise edible packing peanuts.
