Ray always worked alone when animating. He had to animate 7 snake heads as well as 2 tails. Each frame was a 24th of a second and he was only able to average about 13 frames a day (about a half a second of film). This scene is about 4 and a half minutes and it took him about 4 and a half months. It's an absolute masterpiece of animation. Ray Harryhausen was a true wizard of stop motion special effects.

I love the way Leonard Nimoy said it on the Ray harryhausen documentary on this scene,

"Todd Armstrong playing Jason here had the easy task, he only needed to slay the Monster,
Ray Harryhausen had to bring Hydra to convincing life!, All those heads and tails in simultaneous menacing motion."

And Bring it to life he did, his stop motion is simply incredible even by todays standards!

As a kid I loved this movie and still love it today. Who cares that the special effects look dated. Real movie lovers still appreciate it for the writing and the story.

To those who say these special effects are not inferior to CGI, you're right! These computer geeks stood on the shoulders of giants, if I may use that phrase, and Harryhausen was the biggest giant of all.

As someone who loves old stop motion monster movies, this looks really good, the stop motion is really impressive for 1960s, they did the suspense in this scene quite well

Ray Harryhausen once said if a phone or doorbell rang he has to remember which hydra he moved last before answering. You can see why he did only a handful of films last of which was in 1981 with *"Clash Of the Titans."* He was a one man show.

How can someone say this looks dated? It looks GREAT for it's time. I'll tell you something: I prefer this than crappy CGI anyday -.-

CGI is the most soulless form of animation. I wish it never came to be. Imagine how much more advanced (and thus, better looking) stop motion would be today if it had been allowed to continue to grow instead of being snuffed out by CGI.
