A step-by-step tutorial for creating a successful image transfer on the gel plate using your own photo. I'll show you the easiest method for image transfers using a laser-printed image.

Gelli printing is a simple technique, an experimental process of printing that enables you to explore colour and texture in a very easy application. In this demo, I’ll show you how to create a successful image transfer using the most simplest method. Using your own photo, this technique transfers the image onto the gel plate, then a direct print onto paper.

Quick tip. You can transfer beautiful images from an ink jet printer by printing on brochure paper. It is similar to the glossy magazine pics. I press the image onto the plate rub it in and peel it back. The image is transferred beautifully. I can then roll clear acrylic medium over the image and press paper onto it pulling a black and white image. Or I can use paper that I have already colored on the gel plate and again use clear acrylic medium to make the transfer. You can also press multiple images onto the gel plate and get some really cool effects. Lastly you can roll colored paint over the image and transfer it that way. I have played with stencil overlays and I have used photos of texture and patterns to press on top of the portrait image. So many possibilities

One of the best image transfers I've seen. I've had mixed success. Didn't know the colour image works best. Will give it a try. Thanks.

Have you ever actually tried to reuse an image that didn’t transfer the first time over again? I have, bc i loved a magazine image so much that I refused to give up on it - the first time i used way too much paint so instead of throwing the pic out, i put it right back on but I didn’t add any extra paint & to my amazement (bc ive heard so many people say you can only do it once bc it ruins the image) I GOT A GREAT IMAGE TRANSFER!!! Now i was very curious so i did it AGAIN & AGAIN I GOT ANOTHER GREAT CLEAR PRINT!!! So now i just put the image back on the plate whenever it doesn’t transfer. In fact, i just transferred an image a few min ago & immediately after lifting it off my 12x12 plate i immediately put it on my 8x10 to which it transferred beautifully for a 2nd time. So now i have 2 of this one print to work with….making this discovery has given me so much more confidence in doing this bc now i know it’s quite literally impossible to eff this up lol

After watching this, I started using the color printer at the library. I noticed it was printed on a heavier weight paper. I started using paper made for color laser prints in my home black and white printer, and it really improved my results. It's quite a bit more expensive, so don't forget to change back to the cheap stuff for your office printing! Otherwise, you'll have 50 copies of a work form on very heavy paper. Maybe I should see how they transfer 😂

I also noticed that some colors of paint worked better than others, even in the same brand. I actually found black to be most difficult to use, and purple to be the easiest 🤷‍♂️

Im planning on doing a gelli plate photo very very very lightly to use as a stencil to paint a small portrait of my father for my mom. Could I do this on a basic cheap flat canvas instead of paper? And would you recommend a particular color-, like a light gray, instead of black, since its just going to be a template for my painting?

Hi there, thanks for this, I was counting the seconds of your first 'rub' until you lift the first print... Most videos don't do this real time so you don't actually know if they rubbed 20, 30 or even a minute of time. So I was counting and at the last moment the video image switched to your pull, so I still don't know how long the first rub lasted. Can you give me an idea please?

I’m new to this. What are these prints used for? You make it look easy! 😊

Hi Froyle, I am so happy found your channel and subscribed right away. I bought a Gelli plate and haven't dared to use it yet. There are so many videos, but yours is the best. Wonderfully explained:)) Now I will try it out. I have a question that is probably weird, but this is probably a beginner's problem:) If I print a portrait in red, so that the face is red on the Gelli plate, does the coloured laser print of the portrait have to printed in red? Excuse my strange question:) Have you ever done this in a video? I haven't watched them all yet. I would also be interested to know if you can print directly onto a streched canvas. Thank you for your wonderful educational videos. I look forward to many new inspirations. It's fascinating that you can learn at such a distance. Wish you all the best, Gabi:)) From Germany

I'm a newbie to gelli printing and like Gabi Schmidt below, I too have just purchased my very first gel plate but have not used it yet (by GelPress, 8x10 inch). I just sit and stare at it coz I read a comment somewhere that someone ruined their new plate straight off buy not prepping or conditioning it or something. They are quite expensive in UK so that's the last thing I want to do!
Is there anything I should do to the new gel surface before I delve right in (she said timidly 😟)? Your advice would be sooo appreciated! x

Love the video. So what type of images will transfer? Magazine photos? I am not sure.

Thanks! Did you get the photo made from a copy store? Can I use my laser printer and make a color photo (strong contrast). Perfect transfer!!! Thanks for your help. your kids are beautiful

Are the printed paper need to wet before image transfer

Does anyone know whether or not it would be possible to use archival ink instead of paint and transfer text onto the pages of a blank, bound book?

Is it only A4 or bigger size images that goes well. I’ve been struggling doing a mini image transfer 10 cm x 10 cm and it does not work. Is there something wrong that I did ?

Can you use a regular home copy machine?

Could I use a t-shirt to transfer to instead of the paper? I'd like to make a memory shirt with my parents on it.
